Excessive rain in the Southern Alps saw our meandering braided rivers become torrents of bank to bank powerhouses. Both bridges over the Rangitata were closed for 48 hours due to flooding and washouts. This was an inconvenience to many businesses and travellers who needed to get to north or south. Several horrific crashes have occurred with overseas tourists whose concentration have waned on what appeared to be straight roads.
